This one's all about the orange. We start with the same high quality, sustainably sourced chocolate, cocoa powder and Fairtrade British sugar behind every Harry's blend, then work in a natural orange flavouring until the two properly meet in the middle rather than one just sitting on top of the other. Everything's still hand produced in small batches in our barn in the Cheshire countryside, ground to a fine powder by Harry himself, and hand filled into tins you can recycle once the last mug's gone. The result is a chocolate orange hot chocolate you could happily drink in July, not just save for December.
How to make Harry's orange hot chocolate
Making a proper mug of orange hot chocolate at home doesn't need much. Warm 250ml of your milk of choice on the hob or in the microwave until it's steaming but not boiling (around 70C), then whisk in 2 - 3 heaped teaspoons (25g) of Harry's Orange 44% Hot Chocolate until it's completely dissolved. That's it. No orange to zest, no peel to fish back out of the pan.
If you've got a milk frother or a hot chocolate machine, this powder works well in those too. Just follow the same ratio and froth as you go for a slightly lighter, café-style finish.
One 300g tin makes roughly 12 mugs, and the 1kg and 1.6kg bags are there if you want to keep some on the side for the whole of winter.
How does it compare to a coffee shop orange hot chocolate?
If you're the sort of person who orders a chocolate orange hot chocolate every time you walk past a Costa, you'll know the drill: rich hot chocolate with that unmistakable Terry's Chocolate Orange flavour running through it. Harry's version is built on the same idea, dark 44% chocolate carrying a proper orange hit, just without the queue.
It's also considerably cheaper by the mug. A single coffee shop orange hot chocolate typically runs you somewhere around £5.15, and a tin of Harry's works out at roughly £1 per serving once you've made it at home. Buy the 1kg or 1.6kg bag and that gap widens further, since you're paying for chocolate rather than a cup and a seat.
We're not trying to be an exact copy of anyone else's recipe. We just think a properly made orange hot chocolate, using real Fairtrade dark chocolate rather than a sachet of flavoured powder, holds its own against anything you'd queue for.
Ways to enjoy it
Hot is the obvious way in, but it's worth trying this cold too: make it up as normal, let it cool, then pour over ice for a chocolate orange iced drink that works just as well in August as it does in December. A splash of double cream or oat cream on top turns either version into something closer to a dessert.
For baking, this powder does a good job standing in for cooking chocolate in brownies or a chocolate orange traybake, since the flavour is already balanced and there's no fresh orange juice to throw off your wet-to-dry ratios.
Garnish-wise, a little grated orange zest or a curl of fresh orange peel on top of the whipped cream does more work than you'd expect for very little effort. If you're buying for someone else, the tin travels well as a gift on its own, or paired with one of Harry's other flavours from the gift sets collection.
Where it comes from
Every batch of this starts with dark chocolate sourced through the Cacao Trace programme, alongside Fairtrade cocoa powder and sugar, ground down to a fine powder in our barn in the Cheshire countryside. We're a small operation. Harry grinds the chocolate himself, and every tin is hand filled rather than run through an automated line, which is part of why the tins are small-batch rather than mass produced.
The tins themselves are fully recyclable, and the powder is vegan by ingredient, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar and natural orange flavouring, with no dairy in the mix (though as with all our products it's made in a kitchen that also handles milk, nuts and other allergens, so check the ingredients panel if that matters to you).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as Terry's Chocolate Orange hot chocolate?
No. It's our own dark chocolate and orange blend rather than a licensed Terry's product, but if you like that classic chocolate orange flavour, this is built in the same spirit: real cocoa butter and dark chocolate carrying a proper orange note, rather than an artificial orange extract sitting on top of a plain hot chocolate.
Can I make it dairy-free?
Yes. The powder itself is vegan, so oat milk, nut milk or any other plant milk works well in place of dairy. Oat milk in particular tends to give the smoothest, creamiest result if you're after something close to the dairy version.
Does it contain caffeine?
There's a small amount, since it comes from cocoa rather than coffee, but it's far less than you'd get from a coffee shop hot chocolate or a cup of tea, so most people find it fine as an evening drink.
How many mugs does one tin make?
The 300g tin makes roughly 12 mugs at our recommended serving size, with the 1kg and 1.6kg bags scaling up from there. Full serving guidance is on the tin and above in the how-to section.
What's actually in it?
Dark chocolate (cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, emulsifier: soy lecithin, natural vanilla flavouring), sugar, cocoa powder and natural orange flavouring. Made in a kitchen that also handles milk, peanuts, gluten, eggs, nuts, sesame and sulphur, so it may contain traces of these even though none are added ingredients.

Made with dark chocolate rather than milk chocolate, so there's a naturally lower sugar load than a lot of the milk-based orange hot chocolate on supermarket shelves, though it's still a treat rather than an everyday drink. It also contains noticeably less caffeine than a coffee shop hot chocolate or a flat white, since the caffeine here comes from a small amount of cocoa rather than coffee, which makes it a fair option for an evening mug.
Storage: cupboard. Shelf Life: approx. 12 months. To make the perfect cup: make up a mug of hot milk (8oz/ 225g) either in a pan, microwave or Cocoatiser. Add 2-3 teaspoons (20-25g) of hot chocolate powder and stir until well mixed. Servings (20-25g): 300g tin – 12 -15 servings, 1kg bag –40-50 servings, 1.6kg bag – 64-80 servings.

This is the best hot chocolate I’ve tasted (better than hotel chocolat!!!) I put it in my milk froffer and it’s perfect. I wished I’d bought the mint flavour as well as I love mint chocolate. 100% recommend will not drink any other brand of hot chocolate from now on 😄
Bit of a mix up with this order as my husband had ordered on my email for my birthday. Handled v well by Harry (when I tried to cancel it) and we've really enjoyed the three different kinds we tried this time. All excellent. Thank you.
Simply delicious! Think Chocolate orange meets orange Revel.
So tasty and so very chocolate, best I’ve ever had.i love both the chocolate orange one and the dark chocolate too. Together they are even better.
I was looking for an alternative to my well known high street brand of hot chocolate with orange and Harry's popped up in my search.
It came quickly along with 2 cookies which were yummy
The chocolate orange flavour is gorgeous, the powder dissolved into the hot milk easily. I usually have a 2 to 1 ratio of milk chocolate powder and orange but I tried all orange first just to test it. Will order again definitely.
I love Harry’s hot chocolate. My kids and I have it over Christmas - the Orange and Mint ones are our faves! So much nicer than supermarket hot chocolate powder. Thanks Harry’s!
I really love an orange hot chocolate at this time of year and Harry’s is the best! Really tasty, a lovely blend of flavours. Even better with one of their marshmallows too!
I’m from the US and purchased this delicious hot chocolate on a recent trip to Glastonbury but made the mistake of not trying it until I returned home. My first thought upon opening the container and smelling the awesome chocolate orange aroma was I should have bought more and the taste confirmed my regret. I love hot chocolate and this is one of the best!
I'm always on the lookout for tasty vegan hot choc and Harry's selection is great, I love a lot of them but orange is my favourite. They mix really well with hot plant based milk (which isn't the case with a lot of other companies hot chocs!) and are super tasty for chocolate lovers.
Harry's hot chocolates are very simply the best hot chocolates I have ever tasted. Anywhere. At any time. They are smooth and rich in flavour and breathtakingly delicious. And the best of this very brilliant bunch is the Outrageously Orangey. The fact that buying something so delicious is also supporting a small business and making an ethical choice (three cheers for all the gorgeous vegan flavours!) is a great bonus. I cannot recommend this hot chocolate highly enough. I won't ever settle for another brand again.
Even though the weather has been very hot I still need my daily mug of Harry's hot chocolate. Orange and Mint and 70% are my favourites. I mix half flavoured with half 70% - so rich and delicious. Hoping gingerbread hot chocolate will be back for autumn/winter.
Highly recommend this product. Extremely tasty!!
Purchased as a gift
Absolutely gorgeous flavour
Highly recommend 🍊
Went back to a garden centre where I bought the original tin but they had very limited stock, only salted caramel not the orange.
Absolutely delicious products given as presents and some kept for ourselves, the mince pie slices were absolutely amazing wish I had bought more than one , what a find finding this website and their delicious chocolate 👍
This orange hot chocolate is absolutely lovely. Highly recommend.
This is amazing chocolate drink, I take mine hot with oat milk, scummy
Best in the business
We have tried many versions of Orange hot chocolate but this far exceeds any others. This has a smoothness that that cannot be beaten. Not only the orange flavour is exceptional there are others we buy including Mint plus the plain dark chocolate is a hot chocolate lovers paradise.
My chocolate connoisseurs, my grandchildren, gave it 10 out of 5 and Harry my grandson said Awesome! We all agreed it is the best hot chocolate any of us have ever had. Thank you so much and we especially loved the orange one! As a vegan I am delighted with it.
Very yum. I'll be repurchasing soon. I'll just add though I did find the tin a bit hard to open.
Harry’s outrageously orangey hot chocolate is just insanely good!
Fab product and service have re ordered after our first purchase at the Manchester Coffee Festival
I find Harry's hot chocolate comforting and nourishing. I buy it in the large 1.6 kg pouch as I like to gift some to friends in attractive cleaned jars.
Could be more ‘orange’ flavour
Gets 5 stars from my 4 year old niece
Please never stop making this, it’s the best hot chocolate! A lovely subtle orange flavour. I got through a smaller tin within a couple of weeks so ordered a 1kg bag!
Was lucky enough to receive some of this hot chocolate as a gift, and Harry’s orange hot chocolate is my absolute fave! So delicious, even better with cream and marshmallows! 😋😋
the outrageously orangey hot chocolate is lovely. the flavour is definitely orange without being too strong. it is a natural flavour as opposed to the " chemical" taste of many other brands.
Excellent product.
Best homemade hot chocolate Ive ever had
Love it
